Brain Tip of the Week: Use the Magic of Abra

Some days, focusing on what you need to get done is the easiest task in the world. Maybe your willpower is especially high that day. Maybe somebody put something in your morning coffee. No matter the reason, these are the days you’re in the zone, you’re super-productive and nothing and no one can stop you.

But most days aren’t like that for most people. Most of us have trouble focusing – and is that any surprise? Whether it’s your smartphone or the rabbit hole that is the Internet, we’re constantly surrounded by a world of distractions. And that’s before the millions of thoughts in our own heads that pull our attention away from what we need to do.

Luckily, there’s an incredibly simple technique you can use to help focus. That’s my Brain Tip of the Week: use the magic of Abra.

You remember Abracadabra, right? The magic charm that featured in countless fairy tales from your childhood? Our grown-up version might not slay dragons, but it can kill the evil distracting thoughts in your head. It’s a simple mnemonic device to help you remember the following:

Acknowledge any distracting or negative self-talk, because what you resist tends to persist.

Breathe into the part of your body that’s distracting you.

Release the distraction as you breathe out.

Align yourself back to center.

Still not ready to focus? Repeat until you are. The magic of Abra lets you figure out what’s not serving you, so you can let it go and focus on what matters.
