‘Gotham’ Recap: Unleashed

Last night’s Gotham episode, “Unleashed,” opens with Bullock and Jim storming into Arkham with a search warrant. They want to know why Fries and Galavan, who were last seen dead at Arkham, are seemingly alive. But Strange is a step ahead of them as usual. He’s already shredded all his office documents, and the cops can’t search the rest of Arkham without a proper warrant.

Meanwhile, Nygma returns from Indian Hill back to the regular section of Arkham. He’s thoroughly freaked out and insists he needs to get out of there. And Azrael, who hasn’t yet returned to Arkham, kills a priest who doesn’t have a holy weapon.

Barnes is still in critical condition at Gotham General – which means the cops are suddenly looking to Bullock to act as captain. Bullock is unnerved by this but gives a speech to rally his troops. Jim points out it’s a fine speech but they need to think outside the box to catch Galavan – which means finding Tabitha.

Terrified of her brother, Tabitha is trying to leave town when Bullock and Jim show up. Jim convinces her to help her brother because he’s still family. Tabitha admits that Galavan is acting as Azrael because someone messed with his heads. She also says Galavan will go looking for Azrael’s real sword. It’s buried with her grandfather in the Dumas crypt.

Bruce meets with Selina, ignoring Alfred’s protests that it’s too dangerous and they should trust Jim. He wants to break into Arkham and only convinces her when he reveals Bridgit is in there. But Selina will only go alone. If they see her there, they’ll kick her out – but if they see Bruce, they’ll shut down the project.

Bullock, Tabitha and Gordon steal the sword from the Dumas crypt. Obviously, Azrael shows up and is so strong he tosses Gordon outside the crypt with a punch. Tabitha tries to get her brother to remember his true identity – but unfortunately, all she does is remind him he wants to kill Bruce before he stabs her and leaves. As Bullock calls for backup, Jim heads off to protect Bruce. Thankfully, Bruce comes home shortly after Jim warns Alfred that Azrael is coming.

Selina sneaks into Arkham via the laundry service and gross vents filled with rats and sludge. There, she runs into Nygma. He doesn’t want to tell her how to get to Indian Hill because it’s so creepy – but agrees to in exchange for directions on how to get out of the vents.

Butch is worrying over Tabitha’s hospital bed when Penguin shows up with a bouquet of flowers. Penguin is clearly furious at Tabitha but even more so at Galavan, telling Butch that Galavan must die. Penguin reluctantly agrees to leave Tabitha and Butch alone after they help him kill Galavan.

Alfred and Bruce split up to lock Wayne Manor down. Unfortunately, Azrael gets in before they can and swordfights with Alfred. When Alfred is knocked down, Bruce races away in a car – smartly tricking Azrael that he’s hiding someplace else with a pair of shoes. But he’s not smart enough! When he leaves the car at the entrance to Wayne Manor, Azrael begins to choke him with some kind of lasso.

Selina sneaks into Indian Hill, successfully avoiding the guards who have discovered that Nygma escaped. She’s horrified to find a monster man restrained by guards, and overhears a conversation confirming that Strange created Azrael and he’s planning on moving all his experiments elsewhere.

Bruce’s life is saved when Jim shows up and shoots Azrael in the back. Azrael falls to the ground – but he’s still alive and would have killed Bruce had Penguin and Butch not shown up. They know Azrael can’t be killed with bullets – and so Butch destroys him completely with a bazooka.

Sadly, this isn’t a happy ending for everybody. Nygma makes it out of the vents only to be immediately recaptured. And Selina finds her friend…except Bridgit doesn’t remember anything about her former life. Now she’s Firefly – and she has no qualms about shooting Selina with her fire gun.

I have to say, I wasn’t a huge fan of “Unleashed.” I was surprised they ended the Azrael storyline so early – if he really is dead. Most of the episode felt like filler to me. The only really interesting bits happened at the end with Selina running into Bridgit, and the developments with Strange were far too predictable. I did like Nygma’s storyline, which added some levity to a pretty heavy episode. I’m also eager to see a Selina storyline that’s not centered on Bruce, since we haven’t had one in a while. Finally, I really like Harvey as captain and I’m very worried about Butch… I don’t trust that Penguin will leave Tabitha alone at all. But I guess we will find out next week!
