Superhero Secrets: How Gary Vaynerchuk Stays Grounded

If you didn’t know who Gary Vaynerchuk was before, you definitely do now. And if you still don’t, make sure to check out Part 1 of of our interview with this titan of industry. Trust us, you’ll definitely learn something.

Gary Vaynerchuk has a superpower that you won’t be seeing on the pages of your latest graphic novel. “No question my superpower is EQ [emotional intelligence] sonar. I can walk by an employee and just know there’s a problem… with the employee’s back to me.”

Vaynerchuk realizes that his emotional intelligence may not be something everyone has, but he knows he’d likely be a completely different person without it. “And that is something that I don’t like to say out loud because it feels like I’m being super weird…But it has clearly been the bedrock of my existence.”

As someone who’s made his fortune by being a pioneer investor and social media guru, it’s still important to Vaynerchuck that he stays grounded. How he achieves that may not be something you’ll want to emulate. “The only daily ritual I have is pretending something really bad happens in my life. I’m driven by gratitude,” he explains in the video above, “and I keep myself grounded by pretending my children or my parents died.”

But before you run screaming, let him explain his reasoning. It made sound more like torture than it does motivation but by doing this to himself every day, Vaynerchuck can remind himself just what is really important in life – his family. “I make a couple bucks here and a couple bucks there––and there are a couple of people screwing me here and [those are] super minor things.”
