7 Uplifting News Stories from Last Week

We’re back to another work week! If you’re having a rough day, check out these news stories to cheer you up.

1. Minneapolis grocer helps out members.

Minneapolis’ Good Grocer, which opened recently, offers 25 percent discounts to members who volunteer at the store for 2.5 hours each month. This model allows lower-income residents to buy food more cheaply without compromising their dignity by relying on handouts. But you can also shop and pay regular prices as a non-member, which along with donations will help the store stay afloat until it starts breaking even in roughly 2 years. In this way, Good Grocer is helping several Minneapolis residents – learn more here.

2. Chinese woman without medical degree wins Nobel Prize in Medicine.

84-year-old Tu YouYou is one of the recipients of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine. She used an ancient Chinese medicinal text to eventually develop a drug that fights malaria – and she did it with just an undergraduate degree in pharmacology! Learn more here.

3. Canadian student holds disabled man’s hand.

Most people would get upset if a stranger held their hand on the bus. Not Ontario student Godfrey Coutto, 21. Coutto was shocked at first when Robert, who has cerebral palsy and is deaf, grabbed his hand and held on – but let the man do so after realizing he was disabled. Photos of Coutto’s sweet gesture went viral – see them here.

4. Domino’s driver helps out homeless man.

Angela Nguyen had delivered pizza before to Lee Haase, who lives in a tiny camper. But when she learned from another driver that Haase had no heat, Nguyen set up a GoFundMe page to help out the Minnesota resident. In less than a week, that page raised $13,000 and was over $24,000 as of this morning. A construction company has even volunteered to build Haase a home on his property.

5. Craigslist “Missed Connection” goes viral.

If you’re sick of being creeped out by Craigslist, you need to check out this post. A Vietnam veteran sends a message to the woman he met in the rain on the last day of 1972, the day he planned to kill himself. Some have doubted the story’s truthfulness, but it’s a beautiful one and ends happily – although not quite in the way you might expect.

6. Whales play under the Northern Lights.

Like you needed another reason to go to Norway! Harald Albrigtsen captured beautiful footage of humpback whales frolicking under the aurora borealis in his hometown of Tromsø, which you can watch here. It’s a nice reminder of the natural beauty that still exists in the world.

7. Elon University raises money to send worker to Disney.

Kathryn has been working at Elon University’s Acorn cafe for over 10 years. When she mentioned to two students one night that it’s always been her dream to take her family to Disney World, she didn’t think anything of it. But the students created a GoFundMe page – and with the help of their North Carolina university community, were able to make Kathryn’s dream a reality. Watch the sweet reveal here.
